Strawberry Alert

The State of California approved a highly toxic chemical, methyl iodide, for use in strawberry fields. The state agency responsible for this decision apparently ignored the advice of the scientists asked to review the data, and approved the chemical for use at 120 times higher than the rate that those same scientists deemed to be safe. Many scientists are against using the chemical at all because it’s so toxic.

Methyl iodide causes cancer and miscarriages in animal studies. It’s also a neurotoxin, which means that it can damage the brain and nervous system. What would happen to someone who ate strawberries and ingested this chemical over a period of years? No one knows, although some scientists suspect there could be a decrease in IQ, behavioral changes, etc.

So, please ONLY eat ORGANIC strawberries. They’re easy to find, and not all that expensive. Trader Joe’s even sells organic strawberries now. And, if you live outside of California, this still applies to you, since 90% of the strawberries grown in the US are grown in California. If you have a garden or even a large pot on a balcony, you can grow your own organic strawberries. They’re easy to grow and taste better fresh picked, anyway!

To see what chemicals are used on the food you eat, visit the What’s On My Food? website. The site compiles information from the USDA Pesticide Data Program about various foods. Check out the strawberry report at:
54 different pesticide residues have been found on strawberries, including 9 known or suspected carcinogens (cause cancer), 24 suspected hormone disruptors, 11 neurotoxins, and 12 developmental or reproductive toxins. And if that isn’t enough, there are 19 pesticide residues found in strawberries that are toxic to honeybees. Scary stuff. Eating organic strawberries is clearly a better choice. Take a look at some of the other foods you can search on their website. I found it quite interesting.
